Letter Writing Mondays at Fairlawn: Reviving the Lost Art of Handwritten Letters
There’s something timeless about a handwritten letter. The ink, the paper and quiet pause to stop and think before sealing an envelope. In a world that moves so fast, Letter Writing Mondays at Fairlawn is your chance to slow down and rediscover the simple joy of connection through words.
Each Monday, this winter, our community gathers to write. Some come with stories to share, others with gratitude or gentle encouragement. You might write to someone you’ve never met, leave your letter in our Letter Holder basket, and perhaps find one waiting for you in return the following week. Some letters travel to local care homes, carrying warmth and kindness to those who need it most.
“I worry that we have become too disconnected and always rushing onto the next task. This is the perfect antidote and I hope that in some way I can help people from feeling less isolated or lonely. Thank you ”
At our Letter Corner, you’ll find a cosy space waiting for you. There’s paper, envelopes, and pens ready to help your thoughts take shape. You’ll see a Sunday Letter Project poster that tells the story of this growing movement, and nearby, our Letter Holder basket filled with letters written by others who share your love of words.
You might discover the Introduction Letter Basket, a small collection of unsealed letters from people hoping to find a pen pal. Read one that speaks to you, take it home, and reply. Your letter will travel safely through the Letter-Keeper Network, connecting hearts without ever sharing home addresses.
It’s a gentle, nostalgic way to build friendships, spark curiosity, and remind us that kindness can be as simple as ink on paper.
Join our community of letter writers at Fairlawn House, A Little Place. Every Monday 10.45 - 11.45 am. Please bring your own writing materials or purchase at Fairlawn House. Tea and Coffee available.
Local Connections
You’ll also find a space for local post, where letters can be exchanged freely between neighbours and new friends. Some of these letters reach care homes, bridging generations and brightening days. This free-exchange of letters is something which we believe could be a lifeline for anyone who cannot afford the cost of postage. If you’d like to write to a resident, we’ll help you begin. It’s a small gesture that can mean the world.
